Temperature Control

The key to temperature control is to try and keep is as stable as possible. A few degrees variation is acceptable as long as it is within the overall range of 70- 83 degrees Farenheit.

The ideal temperature range is 75 - 78 degrees F. Its actually better if your tank is a little cooler than too hot. We typically cool down the bags with corals in the summertime to the low 70s, as they tend to ship much better this way, especially since there will be no current in the bag.

As a general rule, soft corals tolerate wider variations in temperature than SPS corals on average. There are exceptions to this.

Very importantly, corals will tolerate higher temperatures as long as there is a very strong current. This is because warm water holds less oxygen. So with a good current, corals get a steady supply of new oxygenated water.

Aquarium Temperature Controllers

These are great simple ways to control your reef tank temperature. Basically, a temperature probe keeps track of the temperature in your tank. If your gets too cold, it will turn on (or energize) your heater. If it gets too hot, it will turn on your chiller (or fan, or anything else that you hook up to the cooling side).

You can set the overall range on the controller to maintain the temps at whatever minimum and maximum temperature levels that you want to maintain.
