Chaeto - The Hardiest Beneficial Algae
Chaeto
is a type of beneficial algae grown in aquarium sumps to remove
excess nutrients and pollution. It appears to be the hardiest
type of good algae. We are always amazed how it will survive
a variety of conditions and light levels.
Using Chaeto in Mud Filters
We use chaeto algae in our mud filters and it grows quite
rapidly when we feed the systems heavily.
Chaeto is a one the best types of macro allergies as far
as using it to filter your system. It resembles a green Brillo
pad and is phenomenally hardy
Our lights were off for several weeks in one sump, aand when
the lights come back on the Chaeto was still there and green
so he can adapt to a very wide variety of conditions. It can
grow very rapidly, sometimes if you have a heavy nutrient
load, which is a good thing, because remember you're exporting
those nutrients are exporting those nutrients in one way or
another. In this case you're doing it in using a manageable
algae as opposed to one this not manageable such as a hair
algae. Often at your local reef club, someone has some to
give away. You can order it from many supply houses including
our coral farm.
It will also serve as a house for all sorts of critters such
as copepods and feather dusters. Often if you buy it from
a farm, it will already have many of these inhabitants in
there. All of these together will help to balance your system
in a positive way.
So we highly recommend buying a bad of Chaeto and using it
in your sump or mud filter.
You should get tremendous growth in the Chaeto and not in
the hair algae !
